New Color Guard Director Joins the 728 Cadets Marching Arts

We feel very fortunate to have Color Guard Director Teran Keith join our Cadets family this season.  Teran began his color guard career in 2009 with the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps where he marched for three seasons.  He then joined the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps in 2012 where he march for two seasons.  Teran relocated to Minneapolis in 2015 and currently works as a software developer.  During his time in Minnesota, he has been on staff with Minnesota Brass Drum and Bugle Corps (Summer 2017) and MBI Winterguard for their 2018 season.  He also served on the North Star Circuit board from Fall 2017-Spring 2018.

Leisure Time in Brazil

Let’s learn a little bit more about Teran Keith!

What led you to the 728 Cadets?

“I was initially attracted to the Cadets because of the obvious hard-work they put into the marching arts. In today’s world of “instant gratification” it is refreshing to see a group that values hard-work. They are not afraid to put in the time and effort it takes to be successful.”

Who inspires you?

“Film director JJ Abrams.  He is the master of story-telling. His ideas are wild and crazy, but he stays grounded and creates a sophisticated and accessible product.  Story-telling is always at the forefront of his mind. You never know what he’s going to do, but you always know it’s going to be a good story.”

What are you passionate about?

“I’m always thinking about learning.  At my core, I am an educator, and my mind is always turning towards learning effectively.  Learning is a skill.  I enjoy improving my personal learning process and in turn, helping others to improve their own learning as well.”

What's the craziest thing you've ever done?

“For 8 months in 2014, I studied abroad in Brazil. In the moment, I thought it was the craziest idea. I had many fears about the trip and how I was going to adapt in those truly foreign circumstances. Reflecting on it today, I still think it was crazy, but it was also a decision that has shaped me into the person I am today.”

Who would you most like to swap places with for the day?

“There are times where I enjoy being busy and having a lot to do, but there are other times where I just want to relax and be at peace.  I’ve always wanted to know what it was like to be a Tibetan Monk.  I am mesmerized by the calm and focus of the Tibetan Monks.  With only one day, I feel like I could learn the biggest lessons by living one of their lives.”

What's your secret talent that nobody knows about?

“I have the ability to choreograph movement in my head. The pictures I create are quite visual and detailed. This is a useful skill to have--especially in Minnesota when one could get frostbite for being outside 10 minutes.”

What advice do you have for current members of the Cadets?

“Keep doing what you’re doing! How hard you work is the only thing that you can control in this world. It is the most important skill to have because you can apply it to anything you do.”

What would you like to accomplish this season?

“I want to create an aesthetic and culture that is modern and fresh while still being true to the core values of the Cadets. I want people who leave this organization to have an appreciation for the activity and to be advocates in the future.”
